In 1982 a group of prominent thoroughbred breeders from central Kentucky. Their idea was to create a year-end, culminating championship for their sport. An event where horses from across the world could meet to settle the age old question, who is the best. An event that celebrated the best of horse racing. Their vision ‘Breeders’ Cup Trophy’ which is an authentic bronze reproduction of the original Torrie horse that was created in Florence by Giovanni da Bologna in the late 1580s. The horse is an ecorche, showing the muscles of the animal in detail. Its original purpose is unknown but now is to build positive awareness of Thoroughbred racing and expand opportunities for enhancement of the Thoroughbred industry.
It is done annually to grade1 horses on turf and dirt surfaces for a distance of 2,000 meters carrying weight of 57.2kg for 4years old colts. 3year old in NH carry 55kg and 53kg for SH. Fillies are given an allowance of three pounds respectively. Winning purse is US$6 million held on 5th and 6th November at Del Mar racetrack in California led by the visionary John Gaines for 2021.The 2020 event was hosted without the spectators due to the Covid 19 pandemic. For 2021, there are delays of tickets costing an average of $291 in order to buy time and get clarity of the pandemic situation though it’s the Breeder’s Cup officials hope to host a safe championship. Authentic trained by Bob Baffert won at 1.59.60 and automatically qualified to Haskell Invitational followed by Improbable, Tiz the Law, Maximum Security, Tom’s d’Etat and By My Standards finished last.
Field selection system is used to select horses into the Breeders Cup .The system ranks horses in the order of wins in Breeder’s Cup challenge, point system and judgment by the panel. This system will be active following the 25th October pre-entries. NBC, Fox sports and TVG or TVG2 at 5-6 p.m. ET will air live Breeder’s Cup competition. The leading jockey is Mike E. Smith with 26 wins in Breeder’s Cup. Zenyatta being the first filly to win Breeder’s Cup and was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome S.Moss and trained by J.Shirreffs in 2008 and won by 1 ½ lengths on 1 1/8 miles on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface in1.46.85
